“When the people heard the sound of the rams’ horns, they shouted as loud as they could. Suddenly, the walls of Jericho collapsed, and the Israelites charged straight into the town and captured it. They completely destroyed everything in it with their swords—men and women, young and old, cattle, sheep, goats, and donkeys.”. – Joshua 6:20-21 NLT
This has everything to do with faith in the lord. The reason this was successful was because they believed. If not for that, they might have had another 40 years in the wilderness. What God said might have seemed far fetched, but they trusted and it became true.
“Then the Israelites burned the town and everything in it. Only the things made from silver, gold, bronze, or iron were kept for the treasury of the Lord’s house.” – Joshua 6:24 NLT
The other part of the story was to remain faithful to the lord with the spoils. Jericho was a show of faithfulness with the walls and after with the spoils as well. Both interactions revolved around faith that God knows best. Every interaction with God requires faith. It is the foundation of salvation even.
“For by grace you have been saved through faith; and this is not of yourselves, it is the gift of God; not a result of works, so that no one may boast.” – Ephesians 2:8-9 NASB2020
As with Jericho, no matter how difficult it is to believe or to trust, we do actually need to trust God at his word. Jesus’ whole story about being the messiah, resurrecting from the dead, the meaning behind scripture and sin and death, being the son of God, and all of the counter cultural things he said would’ve been extremely difficult to believe at the time. To the world, it was truly unbelievable. It still is, but believing in what’s difficult to believe is faith. We always need to have faith as Christians and never stop trusting in God’s word even when it’s difficult.
