Claim 2: We Should Take Godly Ownership of Our Decisions and Their Consequences

““Look, today I am giving you the choice between a blessing and a curse! You will be blessed if you obey the commands of the Lord your God that I am giving you today. But you will be cursed if you reject the commands of the Lord your God and turn away from him and worship gods you have not known before.” – ‭‭Deuteronomy‬ ‭11‬:‭26‬-‭28‬ ‭NLT‬‬

God is clear with the way he does consequences that he is a just executor. He takes consequences seriously, and if a person does not obey a command, they will get punished. One of the best examples of this takes place is Genesis 3, where Adam blames Eve for his sin and Eve blames the serpent for her sin.

“The man replied, “It was the woman you gave me who gave me the fruit, and I ate it.” Then the Lord God asked the woman, “What have you done?” “The serpent deceived me,” she replied. “That’s why I ate it.” Then he said to the woman, “I will sharpen the pain of your pregnancy, and in pain you will give birth. And you will desire to control your husband, but he will rule over you.” And to the man he said, “Since you listened to your wife and ate from the tree whose fruit I commanded you not to eat, the ground is cursed because of you. All your life you will struggle to scratch a living from it. It will grow thorns and thistles for you, though you will eat of its grains. By the sweat of your brow will you have food to eat until you return to the ground from which you were made. For you were made from dust, and to dust you will return.”” – ‭‭Genesis‬ ‭3‬:‭12‬-‭13‬, ‭16‬-‭19‬ ‭NLT‬‬

Adam jumped to blame Eve rather than take responsibility for his action. He claims that it was because she gave him the fruit that he ate and sinned. God saw past this and punished him for this sin regardless. It is also clear in all of the excuses after the fall that God didn’t care about a single excuse any of them made. They still got punished the same and were kicked out of the garden. We have to take ownership of our decisions because God will see past excuses and those excuses are obviously lies and deceptions to cover wrongdoing anyway.
