““As for this temple you are building, if you follow my decrees, observe my laws and keep all my commands and obey them, I will fulfill through you the promise I gave to David your father.” – 1 Kings 6:12 NIV
God is telling Solomon that now that the temple is finished, it still can be lost, but if he follows his commands he doesn’t need to worry about it and God will honor his own words. Those words being those from 2 Samuel:
“And I will provide a place for my people Israel and will plant them so that they can have a home of their own and no longer be disturbed. Wicked people will not oppress them anymore, as they did at the beginning” – 2 Samuel 7:10 NIV
In 2 Samuel 7:10, God is telling Nathan the prophet to tell David about the words God is giving him. Nathan is being told of a coming messianic kingdom, the temple’s construction, and such. Notice that the peace promised in 2 Samuel 7:10 symbolized in the temple is contingent on the Israelite’s willingness to obey God. The comfort of temple worship is a blessing not a necessity. We should also take note of blessings from God and not take them for granted.
