“He carved cherubim, palm trees and open flowers on them and overlaid them with gold hammered evenly over the carvings. And he built the inner courtyard of three courses of dressed stone and one course of trimmed cedar beams. The foundation of the temple of the Lord was laid in the fourth year, in the month of Ziv. In the eleventh year in the month of Bul, the eighth month, the temple was finished in all its details according to its specifications. He had spent seven years building it.” – 1 Kings 6:35-38 NIV
There is a tendency to glance over descriptive type of content when not describing something obviously spiritual. I believe this is a mistake. I’ll give an anecdote to explain. During a Bible study on John 2, where Jesus drives out the money changers in the outer courtyard of the temple, we went and looked over a video. The video used details from Biblical instructions of temple construction to see where the outer courtyard was and how that could affect our understanding of the message Jesus. This process of is called exegesis. Looking into passages like this and doing thorough exegesis into all passages may yield fruit in helping understand other ones.
