“If you do whatever I command you and walk in obedience to me and do what is right in my eyes by obeying my decrees and commands, as David my servant did, I will be with you. I will build you a dynasty as enduring as the one I built for David and will give Israel to you. I will humble David’s descendants because of this, but not forever.’ ”” – 1 Kings 11:38-39 NIV
This promise to Jeroboam is significant in the sense of it being a promise of a dynasty “as” enduring as David’s. His dynasty would be equal in a lot of senses to David’s. It clearly shows that God doesn’t show favoritism. I’d argue the only reason there was the added caveat of “but not forever” was because of the Messiah coming from the line of David and the specific plans God had for the family of David. We should never feel so special when given a blessing though to feel as God couldn’t or shouldn’t give the same or a similar blessing to others.
