This is a powerful verse. One of the best passages to expound this with is Romans 6. Which speaks to Christ’s death enabling us to live righteously since he freed us from slavery to sin and how the old ashamed things we did led to eternal doom, but his sacrifice on the cross led to eternal life as a free gift. We are indeed new people because we used to be but slaves and now we are free in Christ and can live lives in accordance to God’s will. There is a massive contrast between the life of a slave and that of a free man in Christ in Christianity and we need to remember that and act accordingly.
