“Join together in following my example, brothers and sisters, and just as you have us as a model, keep your eyes on those who live as we do.” – Philippians 3:17 NIV

A part of our commands is to live as Jesus did. Refer to 1 John 2:6, which says this:

“Whoever claims to live in him must live as Jesus did.” – 1 John 2:6 NIV

If we are following the example of Christ, and becoming more and more like him each day in the sanctification process, then each of us will be able to see Christ’s characteristics within each other. Because of this we can follow each other’s examples due to those Christ characteristics. Obviously, this does not involve following someone into sin. There is no excuse to sin.
