Quarreling vs. Debating: Proverbs‬ ‭17‬:‭19

“Whoever loves a quarrel loves sin; whoever builds a high gate invites destruction.” – Proverbs‬ ‭17‬:‭19‬ ‭NIV

Quarreling is not the same as debating. Debating is an exchange of ideas in a mutual quest for understanding. It’s a common goal for the benefit of all parties. The difference is that with quarreling, or strife as a synonym, it usually is associated with anger and bitterness, which are both sins and comes to no agreement in the end. The point of a quarrel is the fight itself and not the quest for truth. If one likes quarreling then they’d like the anger, bitterness, and lack of resolution that comes with that. Either wanting to watch that or feel that, those things are not productive or useful and can be wildly destructive in the body even. The person who loves quarreling would only be enjoying the negatives and no positives since quarreling doesn’t have any positive attributes because of the sin associated with it. All in all, one can love debate and the quest for knowledge associated in its format, but if that ever turns to the point where anger, bitterness, and a lack of resolution are the end goal, then hate what is happening. Quarreling is sinful. We are not to love sin, but instead we are to love what is Godly.
