“Those who trust in themselves are fools, but those who walk in wisdom are kept safe.” – Proverbs 28:26 NIV
We humans are horrible judges as to what is good for us and others and/or ourselves and what is not. Apart from God, our hearts are deceitfully and desperately wicked and cannot be trusted. Check out this passage from Jeremiah:
“The heart is deceitful above all things and beyond cure. Who can understand it?” – Jeremiah 17:9 NIV
The heart is not only something that we cannot decipher, but also is deceitful even if we could, and there isn’t a hope that we can change that. We cannot ever trust our heart as a result. Using our feelings and our heart to assess situations is nonsensical. It is also clear that our heart and external forces can influence our thoughts. In Romans 8 it speaks to this:
“Those who live according to the flesh have their minds set on what the flesh desires; but those who live in accordance with the Spirit have their minds set on what the Spirit desires.” – Romans 8:5 NIV
If we base our lives on living based on the flesh, our minds become influenced to do fleshly things.
Anyway, all of this is to say that relying on our own thoughts, feelings, and desires, apart from God will lead to us being led astray and brought to dangerous places. We ought to rely on God rather than ourselves, because it will bring us to safety, and we won’t be fools in the process
