“Do you see someone who speaks in haste? There is more hope for a fool than for them.” – Proverbs 29:20 NIV
This person that speaks in haste has the latch ready to open at any moment when it seems the time may be right to say something. They are focused far more on the output of words and information than they are on inputting it. What we are supposed to do as people of God is to actually be quicker to listen than to speak. Take this passage from James:
“My dear brothers and sisters, take note of this: Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry,” – James 1:19 NIV
Note how it says be slow to speak. We are to be inputting wisdom from others at a higher rate through our ears than we are to be speaking it out from our mouth. The key here is using discernment to tell when the right time is versus the wrong time to use either. For example if someone is giving sound Biblical advice, we should listen, but if someone is lying to us and giving us worldly wisdom, we should interrupt them with our words and call them out on it. To the point of a hasty speaker having less hope than a fool in Proverbs 29:20, the fool refers to someone that is legitimately dumb. It is saying with even the intelligence difficulties of a someone stupid, the hasty speaker has less hope of doing right things and living biblically successfully than the stupid person. In other words, they are practically being more foolish than a fool since they actually have the intelligence to help their problem. Be slow to speak, quick to hear, discerning, and very calculative in your actions.
