He Always Does Right By Us: Isaiah 22:12-13

“The Lord, the Lord Almighty, called you on that day to weep and to wail, to tear out your hair and put on sackcloth. But see, there is joy and revelry, slaughtering of cattle and killing of sheep, eating of meat and drinking of wine! “Let us eat and drink,” you say, “for tomorrow we die!”” – Isaiah 22:12-13 NIV

You see the phrase “Let us eat and drink, for tomorrow we die!” quite often in movies and media and such. There are a couple things wrong with this. There isn’t anything wrong with celebrating someone’s last day on Earth with a feast and such, so the basic premise of the phrase has nothing wrong with it, but in most contexts, including this one, the definition isn’t the same. The context here is celebrating without repenting of their sin as well as not relying on God’s power to protect them even when they were supposed to by the rules of the Covenant. They are making a mockery of God and his promise to protect Israel if they obey. God would have protected them if they repented and obeyed. Trust in God, his word, and all he seeks to do in our lives. He genuinely seems to do right by us if we allow him.
