Fear None but God: Exodus 1:16-21 and Genesis 9:6

”“When you are helping the Hebrew women during childbirth on the delivery stool, if you see that the baby is a boy, kill him; but if it is a girl, let her live.” The midwives, however, feared God and did not do what the king of Egypt had told them to do; they let the boys live. Then the king of Egypt summoned the midwives and asked them, “Why have you done this? Why have you let the boys live?” The midwives answered Pharaoh, “Hebrew women are not like Egyptian women; they are vigorous and give birth before the midwives arrive.” So God was kind to the midwives and the people increased and became even more numerous. And because the midwives feared God, he gave them families of their own.“ – Exodus 1:16-21 NIV

There are two things in this passage I’d like to comment on. 1) It is okay, as I’ve said many times, to disobey authority when it opposes the will of God. At that time people did not have the 10 Commandments and were not particularly prohibited from killing, however, not only did not make sense for them to kill God‘s people because of his specific purpose for them, also the Noah Covenant promises that the one who kills will get killed. See Genesis 9:6.

”“Whoever sheds human blood, by humans shall their blood be shed; for in the image of God has God made mankind.“ – Genesis 9:6 NIV

God’s judgment will be upon the person who kills a man because he made man. It would’ve been illogical for them to kill the babies, and against God’s will. God’s will is for the children to live, and for the disregard for any law and command that says otherwise. 2) Do not let anyone cause you to take action via fear. The midwives took action, or should I say didn’t take action, against the command of authority and did it in spite of the potential for punishment caused by their disobedience. They fought the urge to submit and the fear of the consequences for disobedience. Remember that they were slaves already and treated harshly, so it was practically expected to be harshly punished. In the end, God blessed those midwives with families of their own and kept them from the punishment of the pharaoh. Now remember, God would do the same for you in your situation. God is far more powerful, and will protect you against your enemies. Don’t be afraid of people in power when they tell you to disobey God. Obey God and be richly blessed. Disobey and be slave to man.
